I learned that lesson the hard way when my kids were little. We lived in a small trailer that had seen better days, the four of us packed into a space that didn’t give us much room to store things we didn’t really need.

At the time we weren’t what people would call “poor,” but we were definitely "broke" some days, living the kind of life where every dollar had to stretch a long way and every decision around the household budget mattered.

Money was constantly being divided into small pieces just to keep the gas in the tank and food on the table and to keep up with our monthly expenses.

Nothing was ever fully paid off. It felt more like we were keeping a bunch of plates spinning and hoping one of them didn’t crash to the floor before the next paycheck came in while trying to save money wherever we could.

Dinner some nights looked like Kraft dinner with frozen vegetables and fish sticks. It wasn’t fancy, but the kids were fed and I got through the week in my early 20's learning how important budgeting and careful budgeting habits really were.

What I learned during those years is that when you don’t have much extra space or much extra money, we can get very honest about what actually belongs in our life and what doesn’t.

Twice a year, usually in the spring and again in the fall, I would empty the kids’ bedrooms completely as part of a kind of spring decluttering ritual. Every toy, every piece of clothing, every book, every little thing that had slowly piled up from birthday parties, hand-me-downs from friends, and well-meaning gifts from family members who thought the kids might enjoy it.

When you have young children, people give you things constantly. Clothes their kids outgrew. Toys their kids stopped playing with. Boxes of things that arrive with the words, “I thought maybe you could use this.”

Before long the house fills up and you realize it might be time to declutter and start a little spring decluttering project around the house.

So I would carry everything out into the living room and start sorting.

My dad used to describe things using a phrase from an old western movie, and for some reason it stuck with me.

The Good.
The Bad.
And The Ugly.

The good pile was easy. Clothes that still fit. Toys the kids actually played with. Books they loved reading. Those things went back into the room.

The bad pile was the stuff that had simply reached the end of its life. Broken toys, worn out clothes, things that had been used and loved but were clearly finished. Those went straight to the garbage or recycling.

And then there was the ugly pile. Not ugly because the items were terrible, but ugly because they represented the junk and clutter that creeps into our lives when we’re not paying attention. Things that still worked, things that someone else could use, but things that didn’t belong in our house anymore and were ready to be decluttered.

That pile usually ended up going to another family, a yard sale, good will store, or later on what today would probably be Facebook Marketplace, one of the ways many people now declutter their home and make extra income from home or make money online at the same time.

When we live in a small space, we learn pretty quickly that keeping everything isn’t an option.
