I remember refreshing my screen and feeling that quiet embarrassment sink in. Watching posts sit there with little to no response while wondering what I was doing wrong. I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t inconsistent. Maybe I was stupid. Maybe this make extra income online business wasn't for women like me.

I was actually trying harder than ever, showing up even when I was tired, even when life was crazy busy.

What I didn’t understand back then was this. Facebook is not a community bulletin board. It’s not a kindness-based platform. It’s a big computer program. And more importantly, it’s a big business in itself.

Once I understood that Facebook was kinda like a big computer game with rules, everything changed. Not because I learned how to “beat” it, but because I learned how to play it intelligently and WIN!

And like any game, (think Zelda, Mario Cart back in the day) the Facebook marketing game changes, rules evolve. Algorithms shift. Tools change. What worked five years ago doesn’t always work now. As businesswomen, especially those focused on making money from home through content, social media strategy, and digital marketing for beginners, our job isn’t to complain about the game.

The number one Facebook blunder I see women making every single day is this.

They take the time to craft an incredible piece of social media content and pop onto Facebook, post it, then tab out to a different task and disappear.

They expect engagement without giving any.

Facebook does not work that way. 😐

If you think of Facebook like a room full of people, walking in, talking about yourself, and walking out is not social behavior. And Facebook marketing strategy is very clear about this.

I had to laugh when I finally saw myself in that description. Because I had been doing exactly that back then. Logging in, dropping my post, and logging right back out. No hello's, scrolling and visiting other friends on Facebook. Just post and go.

Worse, I noticed how it felt when other people did it to me. The drive-by posts. The sudden pitches in my DM's from someone who hadn’t interacted with me in months. I scrolled right past them without even thinking. Not out of spite. Just because it didn’t feel good.. Especially if I had wished them a Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday 🎂 without a reply. It didn’t feel very "human" nice.

That was the moment the light bulb went on. No wonder many of my posts felt flat. No wonder engagement felt forced. I wasn’t being social on social media. (ps.. we all have life, laundry waiting for us so I get being in a hurry, scrambling to get our to-do list of tasks done in our make money from home biz. I get it!)

The Point is: Before we post, be social. 🤓

Seven to ten minutes is enough.

Engage with other people’s stories. Comment thoughtfully on posts. React to reels with intention. Wish someone happy birthday 🎈. Participate in a group conversation.

Then post.

And after you post, go back and engage again. (it's like closing the circle)

Our face.

Our story.
Our crazy life.

This doesn’t mean every post needs to be vulnerable or personal. It means our content marketing needs to feel very personally human. You!

When we share our thoughts, our experiences, our celebrations, our life lessons, and yes even our frustrations, Facebook sees that as New. Fresh. Relevant.
